On March 13, Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced that the contract for the tunnel project, which was awarded in June 2022 by Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Company, had been terminated. Hyundai Engineering & Construction stated that it received the official termination notice from NEOM Company the previous day. The primary reason cited for the termination was “a request for contract termination due to a reorganization of the client’s business,” according to the company.
This project involved the construction of a 12.5 km section of an underground tunnel in NEOM City, Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia. The consortium was comprised of Samsung C&T, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Greece-based Archirodon. Saudi Arabia's plan was to bore a tunnel underneath THE LINE, a linear city within NEOM City, to operate a highway, subway, and freight railway.
The total contract amount was reported to be approximately USD 1 billion (KRW 1.3 trillion), and since the 2022 contract, Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s disclosed share was about KRW 723.1 billion. The original contract period was until December 29, 2025.
