How does the artificial lake construction project at TROJENA contribute to NEOM's masterplan?

The artificial lake is a central component of the TROJENA masterplan, a mountain destination within the NEOM megaproject located at altitudes up to 2,600m above sea level . Designed to be a 2.8km long freshwater body, the lake serves as the heart of TROJENA, acting as a public space for wellbeing, entertainment, and a global hub for water sports.

Beyond its functional role in water sports, the lake contributes to NEOM's broader goal of diversifying Saudi Arabia's economy away from oil and gas by creating a unique tourism experience . The 1.5km² lake area will also feature an island dedicated to botanical walks and dives, further integrating natural assets with state-of-the-art technology to redefine luxury mountain living.

The lake project utilises a sustainable excavation strategy. According to TROJENA executive director Philip Gullett in Webuild signs £3.7bn contract to build artificial lake for Saudi Arabia’s NEOM, the team is "implementing a sustainable approach by using all the rock excavated and reusing it for the lakebed lining and dam construction."
