Saudi Arabia is preparing to open its first alcohol store in the capital Riyadh which will serve exclusively non-Muslim diplomats, according to a source familiar with the plans and a document. Customers will have to register via a mobile app, get a clearance code from the foreign ministry, and respect monthly quotas with their purchases, said the document, which was seen by Reuters. The move is a milestone in the kingdom's efforts, led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to open the ultra-conservative Muslim country for tourism and business as drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam.
Freight forwarder DSV and NEOM Company have obtained the relevant regulatory approvals to form its USD10 billion exclusive joint venture to support the development of projects taking place as part of the Saudi Arabian giga-project.
Abdulmohsen Alhokair Group for Tourism and Development (Alhokair Group) penned an agreement valued at nearly SAR 760 million, according to a bourse filing. The listed firm inked the contract with Alpha Facilities Contracting Company, affiliated with Al Fanar Group, to provide catering services in one of the residential complexes in NEOM. Alhokair Group was awarded the project deal on 17 December 2023.
Not part of the NEOM project but Saudi Arabia is all set to build a unique oil-themed amusement park called ‘The Rig’ to boost the country’s scope of adventure tourism. The authorities plan to build it in the middle of the ocean. The country hopes to lure more than nine million travellers per year from around the world once the project is ready.
The NEOM Backbone Railway will provide regional and urban passenger transit and freight transport connecting the key regional areas and facilities such as The LINE linear city, OXAGON industrial city, airports and logistic transfer stations. SEMP was contracted in to NEOM Land Mobility (NLM) to provide Systems Engineering and System Assurance (SESA) services. The project is currently at the concept design phase.
NEOM, as part of its sustainability objectives, has recently announced Topian as its new food company. The company plans to focus on developing sustainable and innovative food solutions across five vertical pillars that include climate-proof agriculture, regenerative aquaculture, novel foods, personalized nutrition, sustainable food supply, and ESG. These efforts are aimed at supporting Saudi Arabia‘s Vision 2030, which aims to achieve food security, mitigate the effects of climate change, and attain net-zero emissions by 2060.
NEOM received prequalification applications from companies in December for a contract to design and build a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant. The planned water desalination plant will have a capacity of 150,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d).
